I have been fascinated by Spain and the
Spaniards since my first visit in 1975. Only now
have I had the time and motivation to learn the
language and more about the country, indeed to
buy a reasonable camera and start to investigate
properly. This means moving away from the
southern costas and travelling inland and north.
The main appeal of Spain is, of course,
the lifestyle (estilo de vida)
including the culture (la
cultura), food and wine (comida y
vino) and the weather (el tiempo).
SPAIN'S
CLIMATE
Mainland Spain covers the greater part
of the Iberian Peninsula, sharing it
with Portugal which faces the Atlantic
Coast. Spain's coastlines include the
Atlantic in the north and west and the
Mediterranean in the south and east. It
is the third largest country in Europe
after Ukraine and France, covering some
504,780 sq km. Most of its 41 million
population live in the cities whilst one
can travel for many miles in rural areas
without encountering a soul!
Climatically the country may divided
into two. North of the Cantabrian
Mountains, described as 'Green Spain'
receives most of the county's
rainfall, with warm, humid summers and
mild winters, except in the mountains
where snow (and skiing) are guaranteed!
The greater part of the country south of
these mountains including the huge
meseta (lit. tableland)
is arid receiving a
continental climate, hot in the summer
with cold winters, whilst the thin strip
of Mediterranean coastline is more
temperate.
